On Being A Social Media Presenter

Posted on Mar 25, 2017 by Rachel McLean

I’ve had the most incredible week. I’ve been onsite at a client’s head office, presenting social media workshops to their franchisees ahead of their national conference. Ten presentations over four days. The big standout for me is how much business owners are crying out for social media support – not because of a lack thereof, but more from a reassurance and confirmation angle – “Yes, you’re doing the right thing and here are more ideas for you to try”, from an industry professional. When I started my business five years ago, a good half of my sales pitch was educating […]

5 Years Ago Today, I Started A Business

Posted on Feb 2, 2017 by Rachel McLean

Today, I am celebrating a very special milestone. Five years in business for myself. In January 2012, I was working for an advertising agency. I loved the work that I was doing – we were getting more and more requests for social media help and that work was being sent to my desk. I loved it. But I had read somewhere this quote, “Don’t wake up every day and go to work on someone else’s dream”. I knew I was meant for something bigger – whatever that was. So I resigned, registered an ABN, a business name, got insurance, engaged […]

Are Facebook Likes Irrelevant?

Posted on Jan 24, 2017 by Rachel McLean

One thing all my clients have in common is the hunger to know what’s new in social and what they could be doing more of, doing better (or just doing in general). One stand out question I was asked last week, was, “Should I be running a Likes Campaign?” (If you’re not familiar – a Likes Campaign is a Facebook Advertising Campaign designed to bring you more fans to your page). And it’s SUCH a good question. Are Facebook liked/fans irrelevant? Do we need to spend money to build up our public community numbers? Or should we be investing this […]

Are You Good At Selling?

Posted on Dec 9, 2016 by Rachel McLean

Are you any good at selling? Not selling any old thing – but selling you, or something you actually offer as a product or service? Something you’re genuinely PASSIONATE about?? Usually, it’s much easier to sell something that YOU find interesting, that you dig and that you know 100% will change the lives of others for the better. It’s an easy sale. But sometimes, when we’re in a situation where we are faced with a prospect who isn’t sure if they need us, our product or service, selling can become much more of a challenge. In fact, selling can become […]

When To Pull The Plug On A Social Account

Posted on Oct 26, 2016 by Rachel McLean

Have you ever heard the phrase, “different strokes for different folks”?   To me, it means that different things work for different people. Small Business owners tend to be the ones managing their social accounts, which means, most of the time, we’re the ones figuring out which social accounts to use, how often to post, what to post and asking ourselves “How the F*** do I know if what i’m doing is even working?”   This week, a client asked me straight up, “Rach, should I be on Instagram?” What he meant was, is there any point to his business […]

Facebook Pages Can Schedule Live Video

Posted on Oct 19, 2016 by Rachel McLean

That’s right, guys. We’ve been waiting for this for months now, but Facebook have finally announced that they’re launching scheduled live video for Pages. This will change the way businesses communicate and utilise Facebook Live – and I have to admit, I’m a wee bit excited about this latest update!   Anyone who has been using Facebook Live has seen firsthand the incredible organic reach that this feature provides (THANK YOU, FACEBOOK!), and if you’ve ever heard me speak at a small business event, you’ll have heard me say “video is the future!” or even been lucky enough to demo […]

How To Combat Social Media Overwhelm

Posted on Oct 18, 2016 by Rachel McLean

I want to share a conversation that I had with a client this week. This client had been feeling exhausted and overwhelmed with the amount of time and effort they were spending each week on creating posts, scheduling them, posting different content to their Facebook Page and their VIP group, thinking of ways to reach as many prospect clients and existing clients as possible. As a result, they’d found they were spending hours and hours every week on these tasks, for no financial return. NONE.   This isn’t a one-off occurrence – I’ve seen this before. And the reason this […]

What we can learn from Trump

WOW. Did you watch the US Presidential Debate this morning? It was one of the most intense conversations I’ve ever witnessed. It was also pretty cool being able to watch it live, courtesy of the New York Times. In case you missed it, there was heated discussion around Hillary’s emails, Donald’s tax returns, Bill’s sexual history (yep, Trump brought Bill into it) and much more. Trump was also asked to explain his behaviour in 2005, when he was caught on a hot mic, joking about sexual assault (I think we’ve all heard about this over the weekend). His defence was, […]

Is Facebook Even Worth It Anymore?

Posted on Sep 26, 2016 by Rachel McLean

Facebook has changed. It’s just not the same as it used to be – gone are the days of people actually seeing posts, let alone engaging with them! We’re entering the era of “pay to play” – if you want your content to be seen, you’ve got to dish out the dosh. One of the questions I get asked most is “Is Facebook worth it anymore?” And the answer isn’t a simple one. It comes down to a few, hard truths: Social Media isn’t a silver bullet. Facebook isn’t going to solve all your cash-flow problems overnight. If your primary […]
